Chapter 13
BOSTON WAS WAITING OUTSIDE SCHOOL the following morning when Anna walked up the sidewalk. âPatrick wanted to call you,â she said right away. âBut I told him we needed to talk first.â
âIs something wrong?â Anna asked.
âIâm not sure. But he talked about his tape recorder. I guess he used it on Saturday, while you guys were in the candle shop?â Anna nodded, and Boston continued. âWell, last night he listened to it for the first time. He played it a bunch of times before figuring out what the poltergeist made him say.â
Anna gasped. âOh, Iâd forgotten all about that. It sounded like he was speaking in tongue.â She began walking again and led Boston into school out of the chilly morning air.
âIt was Latin, actually.â Boston passed a slip of paper to Anna as they headed down the hall. âThis is the phrase. I canât pronounce it, but Patrick said it means âI will either find a way or make one.â He researched it.â
âIs it a warning?â
âPatrick thinks the spirit is ready to force Armstrong out of the candle shop. He said we need a plan, and one thatâs going to work.â Boston paused, and Anna could see she chose her next words with care. âI really think you need to let this go, Anna. I would never try to interfere with your choices, but this is serious. And Iâm afraid for you, for all of you.â
A sigh escaped Annaâs mouth. âI know. I donât want to go back in there. Iâm so frightened. But what can we do? If we turn our backs, itâs like admitting defeat.â
Boston shrugged. âItâs not worth your life, Anna. We all know itâs haunted, now letâs leave it alone and get on with our lives. We should be thinking about the winter dance and going to the movies.â
Anna looked at Boston and saw fear in her eyes. For the first time, Anna realized she had found someone as concerned as she was about the ghosts. She slammed her locker shut and leaned against it. âYou know, the poltergeist spoke in Latin to Max and me that night we were in the candle shop, too.â
âDoes Patrick know?â
âNo,â Anna shook her head. At once she turned thoughtful. âSpeaking of Max, have you seen him this morning?â
âI have not,â Boston replied. She was staring down the hall. âBut I do see your sister. Sheâs coming this way, and Aubrey and Courtney are with her.â
âCourtney?â Anna asked, turning her head. Her skin suddenly felt damp, and her vision was blurry. Here we go, she thought to herself nervously.
âLook, Courtney,â Paige called in mock surprise. âThe ghost buster found a new friend. I believe her name is Boring Boston.â Aubrey and Paige rippled with laughter, and Anna saw that Courtney looked very pleased with herself. She laughed loudly, not with a twinkle like Paige, but with a bark. Her face was full of ugly spite, and her posture was erect as if to say, âLook at me now.â
Anna wondered suddenly how she had ever befriended someone so mean.
